Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad at 12:52 after reports were received of a drowning in progress in the Redhouse area.
A group of school students were under the guidance of the Zwartkops Conservancy on a hiking expedition next to the river. It was not a water related outing, but during a rest break they heard somebody entering the water some distance away from the group. On investigating they noticed one of the students was in the water, but soon disappeared under the surface at which point they raised the alarm and notified the 10111 center.
On arrival CWR members entered the water immediately at the entry point identified, and together with staff from the Beach Office on their jetski started a search of the immediate area. After an extensive search the scene was handed over to the SAPS divers to perform an underwater search.

Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad at 15:56 after receiving reports of a drowning in progress at Sardinia Bay from the Water Emergency Response Committee. On arrival several swimmers were deployed into the water to join the Beach Office life guards who were already busy searching. The NSRI launched their rescue duck and started searching the surf and behind the breakers.
The EMS chopper AeroMed2 joined the search, and after some time indicated a possible sighting on the far left hand side of the beach. Rescue swimmers attempted to reach the location, but dangerous surf conditions made it impossible. Another attempt was then made to drop the swimmers using the NSRI duck, but again it had to be called off due to surf conditions and the close proximity to the rocks.
The SAPS will continue the search for the victim in the morning.
Our sincere condolensces to the friends and family of this victim.

Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad this morning at 8am after reports from the SAPS that a paddler was in distress just off Humewood Beach as reported by an eye witness. On arrival on scene the emergency services could not find any craft in sight from the location. The immediate area was searched by the Beach Office using their jetski.
CWR found two paddlers at Kings Beach in the surf, and it was confirmed that it was one of them who had difficulty getting back onto the ski, but the paddler was assisted by a fellow paddler and together they made their way safely to Kings Beach.
It was confirmed by the eye witness that the paddler was not wearing a life jacket or any other buoyancy aid, any person going to sea should always take their own safety into consideration, most of the time the life jacket is that one item that will save you from becoming a statistic.
