On Sunday 14 August 2016, at 11.50am a request was sent to the Water Emergency Rescue Committee (WERC) by the SAPS Dive Unit, to assist with a body recovery off Brighton Beach, and that motorised craft was required.
The NSRI responded to the scene with their duck Rescue 6A. BWBLSC placed their rescue team on standby at the clubhouse.
CWR did not activate the squad and only responded with two members. On arrival, it was established that the victim was in shallow waters where there appeared to be a sand bank. There were concerns that the water might be too shallow for Rescue 6A to reach it. A CWR swimmer plus a volunteer from the SAPS Abalone Task Team were sent into the water.
In the water, they met up with Rescue 6A and an NSRI swimmer, retrieved the body and handed it over to the SAPS Dive Unit at the water’s edge for further investigation by the SAPS.
Our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the victim, and also to the young lady involved in this terrible incident.

CWR, Bluewater Bay drowning prevention, BWB lifesaving members, SAPS, Beach Office and NSRI were on scene. CWR rescue swimmers and the BWB lifesavers (on the jetski) did a thorough search of the area where the young boy was last seen. Strong currrents and the sand bank made the search area large.
