Capsized boat - Swartkops 02 August 2015

At 08:18 the CWR squad was activated after a report from BWB Life Saving Club that a small boat has flipped in the mouth and that there were 3 people in the water. All patients made it safely to shore where they were attended to by paramedics. Two patients had to be ferried back to Brighten Beach from the northern side of the river mouth. One patient was transferred to hospital by EMS with injuries. The boat was retrieved by CWR and BWCLSC.

Well done to BWBLSC, EMS, Fire and NSRI for the quick response.

Capsized boat Cape Recife 02 August 2015

At 14:53 the CWR squad was activated after reports were received that a boat had flipped just off the Cape Recife lighthouse. The occupants abandoned the boat after a private vessel picked them up and took them to the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club. The NSRI took the stricken boat under tow.

Drowning Swartkops River 26 July 2015

At approximately 3pm on Sunday 26th July 2015 Coastal Water Rescue, SAPS, Police divers and Search & Rescue responded in a joint effort to rescue an 11 year old boy who had been swimming with 5 friends in the Swartkops River under the N2 Bridge and was presumed missing. Sadly After a short search the body of the 11 year old was recovered by the police diver. Credit goes to all Rescue units on scene for a well coordinated Rescue. Our condolences to the family for their loss.

Groendal Rescue 05 April 2015

At approximately 15h15, on Sunday 5th April 2015, Coastal Water Rescue responded to a search and Rescue which involved 7 hikers being caught and stranded in unfavourable weather conditions in the Groendal Nature Reserve, Uitenhage.

The Groendal reserve had become inaccessible by foot and utility vehicles due to flooding of rivers. On scene with CWR were SAPS / SAR, Metro EMS, Mountain club, Rangers and the Airforce. A well co-ordinated joint search and rescue was executed which ended in all 7 hikers being airlifted, by helicoptor, from the Groendal reserve and safely hoisted down to the assembly point.

The 7 hikers were taken by EMS Ambo 848 to an allocated venue in town. The hikers appeared in good spirits and all 7 indicated that they did not require medical care.

Well done CWR squad and all other emergency units for your commitment to the search and rescue.

Kings Beach Kite Surfer 24 January 2015

At 18h17 on Saturday 24th January 2015, Coastal Water Rescue was alerted to a possible drowning at King's Beach Harbour wall. A female eye witness had reportedly noticed a kite surfer who the witness presumed may have been in trouble as he had fallen off his kite surfer.

The witness ran to the supertubes to alert the kings beach lifesavers who contacted Coastal Water Rescue, NSRI SAPS, Fire, Beach Office and EMS who all arrived promptly on scene. On arrival at the harbour wall members of all Rescue teams were informed that the kite surfer had apparently already left the water and returned home.

Thanks to all the rescue response teams for a quick response.

Near drowning St Georges Pool 18 January 2015

At 12h13 today Coastal Water Rescue were alerted to a near drowning at St Georges Park swimming pool. A member of our squad arrived on scene to investigate. On arrival the patient had been stabilised by Gardmed and EMS. The patient was taken to hospital. NSRI also arrived on scene to assist.

Veeplaas Double Drowning 15 January 2015

At 18h59 this evening Coastal Water Rescue were notified of a drowning incident in Veeplaas. The squad was immediately activated and on arrival a water search commenced in a shallow dam. During the search the bodies of two young victims were recovered by CWR swimmers. On stand down, the scene was handed over to the SAPS. The Beach Office, Fire, NSRI and Metro EMS were also on scene providing assistance.

Maitlands 12 January 2015

Today at 16h37 Coastal Water Rescue was notified of a drowning in progress at Maitlands Beach. The squad was immediately activated to respond. Shortly after the activation was further information received that there was now additional people in the water who was in trouble. The NSRI was also activated to launch one of their rescue craft to assist with a water search should it become necessary.

Our first rescue crew arrived on scene and immediately entered the water to assist the people in trouble who was approximate 100m from the beach. They were successfully assisted to shore where medics from EMS took over and started treatment. One male patient was evacuated by the EMS medical response helicopter AEROMED3, and the female patient was taken by ambulance. Both patients were in a stable condition.

Great team work by all the emergency services on scene, EMS, Beach Office, SAPS and the NSRI.
