25Nov2016 - Drowning Wells Estate

25 November 2016

CWR squad was activated at 18:46 tonight after reports received via the WERC (Water Emergency Response Committee) regarding a drowning in progress at Wells Estate. On arrival it was established that there were two patients. One had already been retrieved from the water by a member of the SAPS dive unit. Initial information received by CWR was that there was only one patient, however, later information received said that a bystander saw the first person in trouble and went into the water to assist, and got into trouble himself.

CWR rescue swimmers entered the water and joined the SAPS member to continue the search. Bystanders on the elevated pier observed the victim in the water and signalled instructions to our swimmers to assist them in locating the swimmer in distress. They retrieved the patient with the assistance of the BWBLSC rescue duck. CPR was immediately initiated but unfortunately the patient had passed away. He selflessly put the life of somebody else above his own, and paid the highest price for this heroic action. We salute you sir.

Our condolences to the friends and family of this drowning victim.

Services on scene, BWBLSC, SAPS Dive Unit, SAPS, Beach Office, EMS and CWR.
