29Jan2017 - Drowning Sardinia Bay
29 January 2017Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad at 15:56 after receiving reports of a drowning in progress at Sardinia Bay from the Water Emergency Response Committee. On arrival several swimmers were deployed into the water to join the Beach Office life guards who were already busy searching. The NSRI launched their rescue duck and started searching the surf and behind the breakers.
The EMS chopper AeroMed2 joined the search, and after some time indicated a possible sighting on the far left hand side of the beach. Rescue swimmers attempted to reach the location, but dangerous surf conditions made it impossible. Another attempt was then made to drop the swimmers using the NSRI duck, but again it had to be called off due to surf conditions and the close proximity to the rocks.
The SAPS will continue the search for the victim in the morning.
Our sincere condolensces to the friends and family of this victim.
