23Oct2022 - Drowning Willow Grove

23 October 2022

The CWR squad was activated on Sunday 23 Oct 2022 at 15:20 following reports of a drowning in progress/missing swimmer in the tidal pool at Willow Grove in Port Elizabeth. Information received was that three matriculants were jumping from the tidal pool wall into the pool when one got into trouble and disappeared underwater, and the alarm was raised.
On arrival, swimmers joined forces with the swimmers from NSRI Station 6. At the same time, a holiday cottage resident was searching with snorkelling gear at the other end of the tidal pool.
Shortly after the search was initiated, the gentleman snorkelling indicated that he located the casualty underwater. CWR and NSRI members assisted him in retrieving the casualty back to the beach area where Gardmed was waiting, and CPR was immediately started, the CPR was continued for an extended period while the medical crew was working, but it was unfortunately not successful.
Our condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
Services on scene: CWR, NSRI Station 6, Gardmed, EMS, Fire Department.
