07Feb2018 - Paddlers reported in distress

07 February 2018

Today at 18:10 CWR activated the squad after reports received from WERC that there was a paddle ski in trouble off Hobie Beach. CWR members were already there after doing a training swim, and other members responded to the scene from town. Beach Office, EMS and SAPS responded to the scene, and NSRI readied their rescue craft Rescue 6B should they had to launch to assist.

Driving past Humewood Beach a white surf ski was seen opposite Humewood Beach with both paddlers in the water, and appeared they had trouble getting back onto, and staying on the ski. Neither of the paddlers wore any flotation aids.

CWR members monitored their progress, and noticed that they kept falling off the ski, and were making very slow progress towards Kings Beach.

CWR swimmers swam out to the paddlers to offer assistance which was refused. The paddlers did not identify themselves.

Services on scene:
Coastal Water Rescue, EMS, Beach Office, SAPS.
