06Sep2017 - Drowning Hobie Beach

06 September 2017

Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad at 16:57 today following reports from WERC (Water Emergency Rescue Committee) of a drowning in progress at Hobie Beach. A 22 year old person was observed in trouble from the pier. A member of the public ran into the water to assist, but he could not locate him.

On arrival, the squad immediately entered the water, swam to the end of the pier and started a search running down the length of the pier.

Sea Rescue Port Elizabeth activated their 4.2m rescue duck, Rescue 6B, and the Beach Office responded with their jetski.

Despite an extensive search of the immediate area next to the pier, and the craft searching the area between the pier and 6 pillars, the victim was not located and the search had to be called off to fading light. The scene was handed over to the SAPS, and the SAPS Divers started an underwater search.

A shore search will be done at first light tomorrow.
