20Jul2017 - Drowning Hobie Beach
20 July 2017The Coastal Water Rescue squad was activated this morning at 09:51 following reports of a missing swimmer off Hobie Beach, as received via WERC (Water Emergency Rescue Committee).
A group of students from Lusikisiki went swimming. From the shore onlookers noticed that 3 of the students were in trouble. A bystander ran in and managed to save 2 of the swimmers but was unable to locate the 3rd.
On arrival, CWR swimmers were immediately deployed into the water to start a search from the area indicated by eye witnesses where the victim was last seen. The CWR squad was joined by the Beach Office rescue jetski, and Rescue 6B from Sea Rescue Port Elizabeth. The EMS Aeromed 3 chopper was also sent to the scene and performed an aerial search.
Unfortunately, the search was not successful, and it was eventually called off.
