30Apr2017 - Drowning Van Stadens Resort

01 May 2017

On Sunday 30 Apr 2017 at 17h57 a notification was received from Van Stadens Resort management that a young boy was missing at the resort. With no clear indication as to where the boy was last seen, an extensive search was initiated by the resort with the help of the campers and day visitors. This was extended to include Blue Horizon Bay NW, SAPS search and rescue,  SAPS Chopper, Metro Rescue and Coastal Water Rescue. The search covered the entire resort, lagoon perimeter, surround dunes and coastal areas.

Later in the evening more information came to light that he was last seen in the water of the lagoon at approximately 16:00.

A Coastal Water Rescue swimmer joined the SAPS Search & Rescue diver at 21:00 to search the lagoon, but due to poor visibility in the dark the water search was called off. The search was postponed till first light this morning.

This morning at 7am the CWR squad rendezvoused with the SAPS divers at Van Stadens Resort to assist with the lagoon search. Just before CWR entered the water the SAPS divers indicated they had located the body of this young victim in the vicinity where he was last seen, in the deep section of the lagoon.

Services on scene: SAPS Dive Unit, SAPS S&R, SAPS Sector Vehicle, Coastal Water Rescue, Beach Office, Blue Horizon Bay NW.
