24Feb2017 - Drowning Redhouse
24 February 2017Coastal Water Rescue activated the squad at 12:52 after reports were received of a drowning in progress in the Redhouse area.
A group of school students were under the guidance of the Zwartkops Conservancy on a hiking expedition next to the river. It was not a water related outing, but during a rest break they heard somebody entering the water some distance away from the group. On investigating they noticed one of the students was in the water, but soon disappeared under the surface at which point they raised the alarm and notified the 10111 center.
On arrival CWR members entered the water immediately at the entry point identified, and together with staff from the Beach Office on their jetski started a search of the immediate area. After an extensive search the scene was handed over to the SAPS divers to perform an underwater search.
Unfortunately the body of this young victim was not recovered during this search.
